Since Mrs. Alys Enders bequeathed Enders Island to the Society of St. Edmund, the formation of priests and ministers has been a vital component of its mission. More than fifty years ago, in November, 1954, the Edmundites began using Enders Island as their novitiate. As the need for a novitiate waned in the 1970s, the Edmundites began to hold retreats for those in recovery programs and for other priests and religious. Eventually, this ministry developed into St. Edmund's Retreat. Programs expanded to include directed, guided, and private retreats for lay, religious, and clerical individuals and groups.
Today, St. Edmund's Retreat offers guided retreats specifically designed for priests, for deacons and their wives, and for lay ministers. These retreats, generally five-to-seven days long, are designed to meet the canonical requirements for an annual retreat. Other guided retreats with more general themes such as prayer, the saints, and spirituality are also very popular with clerics and religious and can also fulfill the canonical retreat requirement.
Many priests, deacons, religious sisters and brothers, and others find St. Edmund's Retreat an ideal place for a private retreat. Finally, each year, we host many seminaries and religious orders for class retreats, chapter meetings, and other events. Please call 860-536-0565 to find out more about using St. Edmund's Retreat for these purposes.
