The most beautiful man-made structure at St. Edmund's Retreat is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption.
That's saying something, given the grand and stately elegance of our main house. The house was converted from an early 20th-century mansion built for the wealthy Enders family, who bequeathed their island and its buildings to the Society of St. Edmund in the 1950s.
What is it about this holy edifice, built in 2002, that attracts so much admiration? We think the secret of its appeal lies in its "heart": Every inch sings the glory of God; the chapel represents the gospel in stone and glass.
