Greetings From Fr. Frank Sutman

Greetings,it has been several months since I have written. There was a big reason. I was seriously ill. I shall not go into the gory details. Suffice to say, I am well and will soon be functioning at full speed.  There come moments in each of our lives when we realize how vulnerable and how fragile we can become. In a second, we can learn the startling fact that nothing is permanent, that everything can and does change. It is as though we live in a rented world. Maybe you have had the experience of staying in a hotel, sleeping soundly; and then… pow! An alarm goes off! You didn’t set it. The previous guest did; and then forgot to turn it off. Now you are catapulted from slumber into a dark and strange place. Where am? What is going on? What is the meaning of this? Such alarms bells can arise from a loss of a loved one, a marriage breaking up, children breaking contact, loss of employment, or as in my case, illness compromising my life. Whichever, or God forbid several at once, we are throw into unfamiliar territory, the rented room. While these crises are testing our limits, they also can and do provide us with the opportunity to become aware of what really matters in our lives. So what did I learn in a hospital bed; four things:#1 – We need to believe in something greater than ourselves. #2 – We need to care for our bodies, minds, and spirits. #3 – We need two or three people in our lives who love us and whom we love in return.#4 – We need someone to be with us; to show up, to sit, to listen;….simply to be with us. Maybe that is why Jesus is called Emanu-el, “God is with us”.
