Instructors: Valerie Weilmuenster, Jed Gibbons, Cynthia Henrich and Harvest Crittendon Manuscript Illumination had its beginnings in the monasteries as early as 700 AD and refers to the decoration of scripture with gold, painted vines, and elaborately decorated and illustrated initial letters. Building on this rich tradition, we can use the styles and designs of these vines and letters as models and learn how to apply them to embellish text of our own choosing. The approach we take with our class here on the island is to create a learning experience that combines art with prayer. The process of creating art based on the historical tradition of the church brings us closer to the creative spirit within each of us. The result is
