Something has gotta change!...

“Something has gotta change!”…..We sometimes hear that phrase at the beginning of Lent. If we’ve said those words, meant them, and have begun to act upon them; perhaps they are indeed moments of graced clarity and murmurs of sanity in our daily lives. I say “perhaps” because if our desire and direction for change emerge only from heated moments of “self will run riot’, battles for self-mastery, or a slugfest of ego; …whoa nelly…we will most assuredly fail. And why? Because the words of Jesus are crystal clear, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” So as we launch into another Lent, and on our best days yearning for wholeness; have we thought to ask Jesus, “What do you wish for me?”  I sincerely believe that Jesus doesn’t care a whit whether we decide to give up carmel lattes or double stuffed Oreo cookies for Lent, so that in the name of piety we can actually fit into our summer swim suits. No, that’s definitely not the point. Yes, some things have got to change in order we may become the person that God intends us to be. Let us cooperate with God’s grace and take some time, sit down, be quiet, and ask: “Jesus, what do you wish for me?” Then let’s trust the answer. Oh, if you’re going out to Starbucks, get me a latte. - Fr. Frank, OP
