Greek Orthodox Priest and Iconographer

Fr. Anthony Salzman

Fr. Anthony Salzman is a lifelong artist and iconographer. While he serves as a priest of a small Orthodox church near Athens Georgia since 1999, he paints continually.  He has been writing icons for churches and for personal devotion for over 30 years. Father Anthony received his M.Div. in 1989 from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts and then went on to study Byzantine Iconography in Greece.  He studied in the holy city of Thessaloniki for 6 years; apprenticing under master iconographer Kosta Photiadis and following classes in Byzantine Art History at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Icons he has painted can be found in churches in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Georgia, Florida, and Mexico City and in homes all over the United States.

When Father Anthony is commissioned to write an icon, he follows the ancient techniques and guidelines of this tradition. The elements of the icon of the Nativity of Christ (the Christmas icon), for example, will always be the same and yet the artist’s personal and artistic expression is conveyed. There are many schools of iconography which reveal the social and economic culture of the time period that they were produced. Iconography of the 21st Century being produced in Watkinsville Georgia is a different flavor of iconography from that under King Vladimir of Kiev in the 10th Century.

Father Anthony currently serves as a consultant for the Metropolis of Atlanta Facilities Committee which reviews plans and programs for church beautification within the Metropolis.  He is a Visiting Lecturer at the
Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, presenting on the theology of icons, drawing, color theory, egg tempera, and gold gilding.  He also conducts workshops on Icon Painting and travels to Universities presenting on Art and Faith as part of the OCF college ministry program, of which he is a regional director.

He is married to Christine and has two sons, Stephanos and Maximos; together they own
Image and Likeness Iconography which offers icon greeting cards and gifts for the holy days of Easter and Christmas. Father Anthony has also developed a line of “WHIMAGES: whimsical images” which combine an expressionist modern art style with inspiring words of wisdom.
